The Reel Booze Podcast #15 - LETHAL WEAPON

This week The Reel Boozers (Ken & Jay) provide audio commentary for the Family Christmas Classic - LETHAL WEAPON. They're joined by the "Lethal Weapon" himself - Jerry, a man with a lethal amount of movie knowledge!

The crew discusses alternate casting, theme songs for Murtaugh and Riggs, saxophonists, The Wiltern Theater in L.A., Terri Lynn Doss (we love you Terri), ponder the seemingly never ending remodeling of the Murtaugh home, the ethics of letting cops die for a gag, and this movie's relationship with our LORD and SAVIOR: Buckaroo Banzai.

Put down the Barretta 92F, pop a Coors, and enjoy an amazing LETHAL commentary!

The Reel Booze Podcast #14 - DIE HARD

The American Action Movie. Big muscles. Big guns. Big explotions.  Big tits.  Beating impossible odds. Fast cars. Faster women. Bad guys with metal teeth and robot henchmen. Epic fights. Deafening music. Screaming metal.

...riding off into the sunset.

The aforementioned ingredients were Shake-n-Baked for years. The core ingredients were harvested during the '50s & '60s, the recipe was crafted in the '70s, then in the 1980's all we had to eat at the local cineplex was a Rambo burger with a side of Arnold and an explosion to wash it all down. The 1980's perfected the action genre. Viagra hadn't been invented yet, so a lot of shit got blown up.

Until July 15th 1988.

A movie with the goofball actor from Moonlighting hit the theaters but it had a title that sounded as if Rambo himself was having a hard time holding it up.

DIE HARD.

The first word repents finality.
The second says "fuck you".

The American Action Palate changed in a week.
Limited release July 15, 1988
Wide release July 22, 1988

The Rambo burgers, the hot side of Arnold...we finally saw them for what they were...burnt steak slathered in A-1.
We'd been eating shit and loving it because that's all we'd had for years.

We didn't know anything else.

To be a hero you had to have muscles and guns and bunch of other stuff we didn't have.

We didn't have ripping muscles.
We didn't have screeching machine guns.
We had a job we were good at but bored with.
We had a rocky marriage.
We did what we had to do to get by.

And so did John McClaine.

I was 15 years old when DIE HARD hit the theaters. I just watched it again for the 500th time for this podcast.

I'm now 44.

*Probably* like you, I don't have ripping muscles.
I don't have a screeching machine gun.
I have a job I'm good at but bored with.
I've been in more shitty relationships than good ones.
I do what I have to do to get by.

Just like John McClaine.

2 hours and 12 minutes of celluloid blew a bigger hole in the American consciousness then Chuck Norris could ever hope to do, even if he was swinging Lee Marvin's epic cock.

DIE HARD redefined the American Action Movie. After July 15th, 1988 an action movie no longer needed big muscles, big guns, big explotions, big tits, and all those other things. The star of the movie became a guy like us.

You.
Me.
Them.
Everyone.
Everyone is John McClaine.

*I just watched the movie and (fueled by distrust of the internet-I don't believe anything I find online) I can't remember how it's spelled in the credits. McClane. McClaine. McClain.

The Reel Booze Podcast #13 - HOOPER

1978 when men were men..and stuntmen were the epic peak of manliness! Prepare for epic fights, epic stunts, and epic drinking. 1978's HOOPER starring The Bandit and Forrest Gump's mother, costarring the coked out guy with the cool hair from Airwolf. We start out drinking BRENNIVIN (aka THE BLACK DEATH) from Iceland and end with...honestly I don't remember. Put on a crash helmet, grab a suitcase of Olde Style, and don't say you haven't been warned. Buckle up and don't drink and drive.

The Reel Booze Podcast #12 Big Trouble in Little China

THE REEL BOOZE VAULT OF MISFIT PODCASTS

The Vault mostly contains horrible misfit podcasts too weird to live yet too rare to die.
Occasionally I stumble across a rarity...as rare as a Chinese girl with green eyes...

Recorded sometime in 2014 and, at the time, we weren't happy with the way it turned out. We "go off the rails"; basically forgetting that we were watching a movie as Jerry "The Thing"  fed us an on-the-spot invented drink called "Joan of Arc" or "Flaming Kings" or something like that.

Hindsight being what it is I reviewed it recently and lemme tell ya what: It's not bad.

Give it a listen and tell us what ya think!

Episode 10: CLERKS

I assure you we're open...

Think back to 1994. Movies like Pulp Fiction, The Lion King and Forrest Gump tore up the box office. Then came a little film about a couple of slackers from New Jersey.  Shot entirely in black & white and made for a mere $28,000. This little movie that could would go on to gross millions of dollars, launch the career of an aspiring director and give birth to several cult classics along the way. And they weren't even supposed to be there that day.

Heterosexual life partners Ken and Jay are joined once again by Dan Dan the Mopar man as Reel Booze watches CLERKS! Grab yourself a 40, some boxed wine, or whatever spirit treats you best as we get deep inside the minds of two best friends that just so happen to be CLERKS...

And remember, try not to suck any d!ck on your way through the parking lot!

The Reel Booze Podcast #9 - The Big Lebowski

Episode 9: The Big Lebowski

Way out west there were these fellas I wanna tell ya about. Go by the name of Ken and Jay. At least that was the handles their loving parents gave them, but they never had much use for it themselves. See, this Ken and Jay, they called themselves "Reel Booze". Now, "Reel Booze" - there's a name no man would self-apply where I come from. But then there was a lot about Reel Booze that didn't make a whole lot of sense. And a lot about where they lived, likewise. But then again, maybe that's why I found the place so darned interestin'. See, they call Chandler, AZ the "City Of Chandler"; but I didn't find it to be that, exactly. But I'll allow it as there are some nice folks there. 'Course I ain't never been to London, and I ain't never seen France. And I ain't never seen no queen in her damned undies, so the feller says. But I'll tell you what - after seeing Chandler, and this here story I'm about to unfold, well, I guess I seen somethin' every bit as stupefyin' as you'd seen in any of them other places. And in English, too. So I can die with a smile on my face, without feelin' like the good Lord gypped me. Now this here story I'm about to unfold took place in the early '90s - just about the time of our conflict with Sad'm and the I-raqis. I only mention it because sometimes there's some men... I won't say heroes, 'cause, what's a hero? Sometimes, there's some men. And I'm talkin' about Reel Booze here - Reel Booze from Chandler. Sometimes, there's some men, well, they're the men for their time and place. They fit right in there. And that's Reel Booze. Reel Booze, from Chandler. And even if they're lazy men - and Reel Booze was most certainly that. Quite possibly the laziest in all of Maricopa County, which would place him high in the runnin' for laziest worldwide. Sometimes there's some men, sometimes, there's some men. Well, I lost my train of thought here. But... aw, hell. I've done introduced it enough.

Ladies and gentlemen, grab a White Russian, some Oat Sodas and some Sioux City Sarsaparilla. Reel Booze Proudly presents... The Big Lebowski.
